The journey to my destination

Winning British Hairdresser of the year is something that not many of us can imagine, but what if you did win it? What would your legacy be?

Over a year ago Sally Brookes (current British Hairdresser of the Year) contacted me to ask me if ghd would be one of the sponsors for a documentary about the hair industry. Sally wanted to make sure during her year that she was helping to future proof the industry. Of course I jumped at the chance to be part of it.

Unfortunately there is a massive stigma about the hairdressing industry where schools and parents believe that you would only become a hairdresser if you were not clever at school and that you can’t earn a good salary being a hairdresser. This makes me so angry! I am intelligent, I chose to be a hairdresser because I am creative and I love working with people. I have studied many years to perfect my craft and will continue to constantly evolve.

My job has allowed me to own my house, have nice holidays and earn a good salary and I smile. I am so grateful and blessed to be part of this industry. How many careers can you get that kind of statement from?

This week is national careers week, it’s not too late to go to your local school and share your journey in the. hair industry. If you want some help. head over to the choose Hair website to download your pack.

Sally’s belief is that hairdressing isn’t a second-best career, it’s full of opportunities that can take you through your life and I could not agree more.
